Present and past marine research study sites have been plotted on a paper map in the front hall of the main building (Fernald) of FHL. Research sites on that map are marked with numbered pins in several colors differentiating
- long-term (LT) study sites,
- mid-term (MT) study sites (24 years),
- short-term (ST) study sites (<1 year), and
- historic (H) study sites.
The key to the numbered list of research sites marked with numbered pins is posted on a page originated and maintained by Claudia Mills, Marine Research Study Sites in the San Juan Islands, including a link from each site to its corresponding photo in the Washington State Department of Ecology set of online Shoreline Aerial Photos. In the key list, each research site is identified by the location of the study, followed by a brief explanation of the project and, where available, a brief list of publications reporting the study. The literature listed is not yet comprehensive. Literature available in the FHL Library is noted as such.
This mapping project is ongoing and is undoubtedly incomplete. Contact Claudia Mills to make additions or corrections, including literature citations.
With the mapping assistance of Jim Slocomb of Friday Harbor, it is planned eventually to provide an interactive GIS-based map on the web with the same numbered sites as on the paper map.
Dr. Mills has also written a page pertaining to the upland portions of the FHL Terrestrial Preserve; this page includes an abbreviated plant checklist, by habitat on the lab uplands.
Dr. Tom Schroeder publications include studies which recapitulates the biogeographic history over the past ~150 years of FHL.
