Students, Researchers, and Visitors must contact the Boat Safety Officer (BSO) before using FHL rowboats or powerboats.
All visitors, including those on field trips, must receive an in-person orientation before using the rowboats. If you’re wondering whether this applies to you, the answer is YES! Feel free to contact the BSO prior to your arrival to set up a short orientation on the dock.
We require that all users of FHL motorboats carry a Washington State boater education card unless exempted by the State’s age requirement. Contact the BSO for more information or about hiring a qualified boat driver to help you.
Persons needing to SCUBA dive must contact the Dive Safety Officer (DSO) and are advised to do so well in advance of their arrival at FHL. All diving at UW and FHL is for scientific purposes and conducted according to AAUS standards. SCUBA medical clearance will be required. If you wish to snorkel while at the labs you must also meet with the DSO before proceeding with snorkeling plans. Please plan on bring your own snorkeling gear if possible (full 7mm wetsuits required).
Float Plan: Please submit to BSO (Kristy Kull) personally, or IF previous communication has been established, this form may be deposited in the Fernald mailbox marked “Kitaeff/Kull” or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Form attached is available as a pdf or word document. Floatplan (.doc) Floatplan (.pdf)
Usage: Motorboat use hours will be calculated according to the sign-out sheets. Nitrox users will submit their usage. For your convenience, here are pdf and xls versions of a form you can use to log your boat use, fuel use and SCUBA fills.
