After a cold and snowy February, spring came to San Juan Island in March with some gorgeous sunny days and balmy weather. We look forward to the UW Marine Biology majors and other students arriving on April 1, no joke!

February 2019 brought lots of snow to San Juan Island and we do not have the equipment to deal with it well here, so we had to wait until warmer weather and rain came to melt it.

2018 has been a year of highs and lows at Friday Harbor Laboratories. We’ve seen some wonderful emerging research, such as the marine studies made possible with the OceanGate submersible and the SeaDoc Society, and we look forward to the possibilities of future years.

It is with great sorrow that we share the death of the brilliant scientist Osamu Shimomura, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 for the discovery and isolation of green fluorescent protein (GFP).
