Dear FHL Friends and Family,
It is with great sorrow that we share the death of the brilliant scientist Osamu Shimomura, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 for the discovery and isolation of green fluorescent protein (GFP). Professor Shimomura shared the Nobel Prize with two American scientists: Martin Chalfie of Columbia University and Roger Tsien of the University of California San Diego. Professor Shimomura spent the summer of 1962 at Friday Harbor Laboratories and isolated GFP from the local jelly Aequorea victoria. Professor Shimomura later spent many years studying at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA. Read more about the life and work of Professor Shimomura.
His legacy lives on.
