Wi-Fi
Two Wi-Fi networks are available across campus: “eduroam” and “University of Washington.” These are linked to the internet via 1Gb/s fiber optic lines that are tied into the main University of Washington campus network (part of Washington State’s K-20 system). See University of Washington’s information on these two networks.
A third, much slower, legacy network (“FHL” or “Fernald …”) is also available in many areas of campus, but is being phased out.
Before connecting to a network, be sure to apply all critical updates and security patches for your operating system and install up-to-date virus protection; contact our IT staff if you have any questions regarding the security status of your device. The use of distributed file-sharing programs is prohibited because they slow network performance and often involve infected or copyrighted files.
1. EDUROAM
The fastest and most secure network, this is the preferred connection if you have a UW NetID or belong to another institution that participates in eduroam.
- If you have used eduroam before at UW or another participating institution, you can log onto it at FHL in the usual way.
- If you haven’t used eduroam before but have a UW NetID, you may log onto it at FHL after first configuring your device. Go to onboard.wifi.uw.edu and follow the instructions.
- If you haven’t used eduroam before but are affiliated with a participating eduroam institution other than UW, you may log onto it after first configuring your device. Contact your institution for instructions.
- If you are not affiliated with UW or any other participating institution, you must use one of the other networks.
NOTE FOR FHL COURSE STUDENTS: if you’ve never had a UW NetID, you will receive instructions on how to set one up after you register and pay for your course with UW (ask the Academic Services Manager if you need help). All course students should set up a NetID as soon as possible for access not only to wi-fi but to other UW services.
2. UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON GUEST NETWORK (unsecured)
This network is as fast as eduroam but unsecured. When you click on the University of Washington network in your settings, you will be taken to a captive portal screen that will provide you with connection options. Select Connect as a guest and agree to the terms.
This network will you 12 hours of internet access before it disconnects you, requiring you to reconnect.
3. FHL NETWORK
This network is relatively slow, no longer supported, and gradually being phased out. For the time being, it is still available in many areas of campus to use if you have no UW NetID and want something more secure than the University of Washington network. You can access the FHL network using a campus-wide password. If you’re unsure of the password, ask the Front Office or any FHL staff member.
