FHL Stockroom
WELCOME TO THE STOCKROOM!
The Stockroom is open 24 hours a day with keypad access, and is generally self-serve except for purchases. Please do not hesitate to contact Stockroom Manager Peggy Combs if you have any questions (M-F, 8-5). Call or email her : 206-616-0697, fhlstock@uw.edu. If you’re not sure, please ask first!
PACKAGES
All incoming packages (UPS, FedEx, USPS) come to the Stockroom. Peggy lists each package in a log book near the front door, places the item in the furnace room, and emails the recipient that it has arrived. When you pick up a package, look for it listed in the log book and write in your initials next to the listing – so we know that you picked it up.
ITEMS TO BORROW
We have many items available to borrow for your studies, located on shelves in the stockroom and in outdoor sheds near the Student Shop. To find a particular chemical, refer to the chemical locator near the back of the Stockroom; for other supplies, look to the item locator on the wall across from Peggy’s desk.
Boots can be found in Shed 3, each one guaranteed to have at least one hole. 🙂
E-ware is glassware marked with an “E” for “Embryological.” It is reserved for use in rearing embryos, which are especially sensitive to chemicals – even trace amounts left behind from long ago can quickly kill them. If you need to use E-ware, be sure it only comes into contact with seawater or tap water – no soap!
If you need to use formaldehyde in glassware, only use the “F-ware,” kept in the Volatiles Locker next to the Student Shop.
Items that have a UW or FHL number tag need to be checked out through the Stockroom computer; your instructor, TA, or Peggy can assist you with that. Your password in the stockroom checkout is usually the first 5 digits of your email address.
**If you borrow an item, please treat it well, clean it before returning, and always put it back exactly where you found it! We do not have the staff to clean or put away equipment, and rely on our visitors to be responsible.
ITEMS TO BUY
The Stockroom also has a variety of items available for purchase – everything from pens, notebooks, and dissecting equipment to awesome FHL clothing and mugs! 👚 “The Store” is generally open Monday thru Friday, 8-5, and can accept cash, check or credit/debit card for payment. If you wish to make a purchase, enter on your own or one other person, as it can take a few minutes for each transaction.
CHEMICALS
Please read any info about hazardous waste posted in each lab. ☠️ Most importantly label everything you put in containers!
Thank You and may your adventures at Friday Harbor Labs be memorable,
