WiFi Network

The “FHL” network everywhere on campus, and once you’ve logged into it on one location, you are good to go everywhere. In addition, Fernald Lab and the Lecture Hall have a UW wifi network that you log in using your UW NetID and password; it’s considerably faster than the FHL network.

Use wireless internet only. Please do not plug into the wired network without first checking with FHL IT: fhlit@uw.edu

No peer-to -peer file sharing (ex. BitTorrent) or downloading copyrighted materials that you don’t pay for.

Using computers at FHL

We encourage you to use your personal laptops whenever possible to minimize any potential for the spread of covid or other pathogens.  And speaking of viruses, ensure that your laptop has an active anti-virus program.

You may use any of the common use computers in the computer lab. There are other programs that you might find useful installed on these computers too. If you would like any programs installed on the common use computers, please talk to us about it.

We have four high end iMacs for computational and graphically intensive use that can be used in the hallway of the Computer Lab.

All common use computers have the same login credentials, which are posted in the Computer Lab Building (ask if you cannot find them).

Scanning

There is a high-resolution scanner for your scanning needs located in the Computer Lab, and others are located in the Library and Office. If you are unsure of how to use the scanners, let us know and we will assist you to the best of our ability.

Printing

Use the common use computers for printing rather than trying to connect to the printers from your laptop. If want to print from your laptop, you will need to install the printer driver – just be sure to select the computer lab printer from the list of printers that will show up.

There is no charge to you personally to make prints or copies for class use, but we ask you to conserve trees and ink by printing and copying only when necessary!  If you have a PDF, try to read it on a computer first. If you need to print, please make sure to make it double-sided. Check with us if you are not sure where the print options are in the program you are using, as it varies.

For personal use, prints and copies cost 10 cents per side for black-and-white and 25 cents for color. This is an honor system, so please keep track and pay in the stockroom of the coin box by the printers.
