Friday Harbor Laboratories Community Standards

At Friday Harbor Labs (FHL), we are committed to upholding standards that empower each of us – students, instructors, researchers, and staff – to learn and grow as a community in a safe and respectful environment. As a fellow resident at FHL, you are asked to follow these standards and are encouraged to have conversations within your living or working group on these issues early and as often as needed during your stay.  Also see FHL Standards of Conduct.

To report an incident that violates FHL Community Standards or Standards of Conduct, you may use the FHL Anonymous Feedback & Reporting Form.

  1. The FHL community is supported by an amazing custodial, housing, and dining staff that take care of our daily needs and ensure our campus is well-kept. Show respect and gratitude for this service by keeping personal and common spaces clean, especially towards the end of your stay.
  2. Our use and enjoyment of the natural environment here is possible because of the conservation efforts of generations before us, and we are committed to leaving it in the same or better condition for future generations. The principle of “leave no trace,” or leaving a space in a better state than it was found, is a basic principle of life at a marine station and is a crucial tenet in the FHL community.
  3. Others in your living or working group may have differing tolerances of cleanliness, need for quiet, or expectations of privacy. Be open about your own needs as well as receptive and considerate of the needs of others. Begin these conversations early and as often as needed.
  4. Quiet hours on campus are from 10 pm – 7 am. During these hours, respect the need of roommates, neighbors, and island residents for rest or quiet work time; many have to rise early for lectures, experiments, or tides! Rather than socializing in dorm hallways or on the deck, where even a quiet conversation can be heard through the thin walls and open windows, gather in the Dining Hall.
  5. Community standards must be actively anti-racist, anti-sexist, and mindful of latent prejudices.
  6. The easiest way to solve a problem is to talk about it, and we encourage residents to problem solve within their own living or working groups. However, some conversations are just too big to tackle alone. Residents are encouraged to push these larger conversations to staff with more decision-making authority and experience as early as is practical. These conversations, are safe, confidential outlets to find equitable solutions. A good place to start is FHL Student Services (fhlstudents@uw.edu or 206-616-0752).
