Research Methods in Ocean Acidification 2018

Credits: 9

Instructor(s): Dr. Jon Havenhand , Dr. Terrie Klinger , Dr. Andrew Dickson

Prerequisites:

*** Cancelled as of 2-26-2018 ***

Research Methods in Ocean Acidification introduces students to key theory, methods, and techniques in ocean acidification research. Through a mixture of hands-on lab experience, field observations, and small-group workshops and lectures the course aims to provide students with the relevant knowledge and skills to perform ocean acidification research at their home institutions, and in other settings.

Students will become comfortable with standard protocols for assessing carbonate chemistry parameters in the laboratory, gain an understanding of the underlying chemical theory, and learn how these impact the design and running of biological experiments. In addition the class will summarise key developing issues in the field of ocean acidification research and how these relate to the broader field of global ocean change.

The class will have access to the Ocean Acidification Environmental Lab at FHL, and will have hands on experience manipulating carbonate chemistry conditions in a controlled laboratory environment. In the field, we will monitor local seawater conditions and set our observations in the context of longer-term monitoring. Guest speakers will present recent research and discuss practical implications, and applications, of ocean acidification research.
