OCEAN 210 | Autumn 2019

Integrative Oceans 2019

Credits: 4

Instructor(s): Dr. Kirk Sato

Prerequisites:

This course is offered as part of Autumn Marine Studies 2019.

This course will focus on the ocean’s large-scale circulation, which plays a very important role in controlling the earth’s climate. You will learn the patterns of, and processes that cause, this circulation in both the surface ocean and deep sea. You will also learn how to use observations (data) to answer oceanographic questions quantitatively as well as qualitatively (problem solving skills). Topics include temperature-salinity analysis; water mass identification; water, salt, and heat budgets; chemical tracer distributions; advection and diffusion; ocean-atmosphere interactions; El Niño-Southern Oscillation; ocean circulation and climate change.

Textbook to be determined.
