I have been notified that I am receiving funds from the Mary Gates Endowment for Students.

Now what?

Congratulations on your award! Funds from the Mary Gates Endowment for Students are handled a little differently than other funding sources that FHL partners with. Read below for next steps and expectations.

Notify the UW Financial Aid Office

If you receive UW Student Financial Aid, be sure to update the Financial Aid Office of your change in need – a quarter at FHL is often more expensive than a quarter spent on your home campus. Adjusting your financial need should allow you to receive more financial aid. Use the Course Costs FHL webpage as a resource to help you accurately file a change in need with the Financial Aid Office.

If you have questions about your individual situation, contact the Student Financial Aid office:

E-mail osfa@uw.edu
Call 206-543-6101
Visit office in Schmitz Hall, first and fifth floors.

Disbursement

Funds from the Mary Gates Endowment for Students will be deposited into your MyUW Account generally during the first or second week of the quarter.  Note that the deposit amount may be less than the initial award, depending on other sources of financial assistance being applied to your account.

These funds can either be used to pay for your UW tuition or to pay for FHL housing and dining fees. If you want to use the funds to pay for FHL housing and dining fees, you must do 2 things:

  1. Let FHL Academic Services Manager know so they can work with you on this.
  2. The MGE award will NOT be automatically applied. Instead, you will need to transfer the award via Direct Deposit to your personal checking account, from which point, you can pay Friday Harbor Labs directly.

→→ Follow these instructions in order to set up Direct Deposit from your MyUW account.

Conditions

Recipients of funding from the Mary Gates Endowment for Students must acknowledge the endowment as a source of support which allowed your FHL experience to be possible.

  • Any public materials you create (presentations, research papers, posters, social media posts) related to the program or class you attended must mention the awarded support from the “Mary Gates Endowment for Students.”
  • Any public materials you create must include the MGE logo.
  • You may refer to yourself as a participant in the class/program you took at FHL, supported by the Mary Gates Endowment for Students. NOTE: Recipients of Mary Gates funds through FHL are NOT named Mary Gates Scholars.

Students who receive MGE awards for research experiences/apprenticeships at FHL are not required to present their results at the UW Undergraduate Research Symposium held every spring quarter in May. However, we strongly encourage you to present a talk or poster at the symposium, letting others know about your research at FHL and experiencing the community of other recipients of the Mary Gates Endowment for Students! If you’re attending FHL during spring quarter, you may attend the symposium the following spring.
