Research Application Acceptance Policy

August 18, 2022

Researcher applications are reviewed by FHL staff and the Director. When availability of space (housing and lab space, if requested) is a limiting factor, e.g. during the summer months, priority decisions are based in part on the necessity of conducting the research at FHL per se, e.g. whether the work involves local marine organisms or habitats; on the necessity of conducting the research at that particular time of year, e.g. whether the study organisms or particular life history stages are only available at that time; and on the appropriateness of the research for FHL facilities, e.g. whether the work can be successfully conducted with the equipment and resources available at FHL. In making acceptance decisions, FHL takes into account the success of any prior visits by an applicant, considering evidence for constructive collaborations, productive research, positive FHL community interactions, and adherence to the FHL Standards of Conduct and Researcher Agreement. If acceptance decisions are unclear or controversial, the FHL Research Advisory Committee is consulted.
