For over 100 years, courses and research involving marine seaweeds have been part of the mission of the Friday Harbor Laboratories (FHL), UW’s marine science station based on San Juan Island. Through time, due to increased costs of graduate training, fewer graduate students have been able to afford to take courses on marine phycology at FHL. This also reduces the community of students and scientists pursuing their research in phycology at FHL. The intent of this fund is to advance phycology research and training at FHL by reducing the financial barriers for training (especially for graduate students), by supporting continued training in phycology, and by encouraging scientific research in phycology. The endowment may also support postdocs, summer researchers, as well as people on sabbaticals. This funding may be used to cover fees, housing, travel, and other related expenses.
