First Call for Artists at FHL!
April, 2018

Dear Artists,

The University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories invites interested artists to apply for a Fellowship to visit the Whiteley Center on Washington State’s San Juan Island. This is a short-term ‘Artist in Residence’ appointment to allow a creative person to ply their craft at the Center.

The fellowship will be used to defray the costs of housing and some meals on the grounds of the Friday Harbor Laboratories, and full-time use of the Macfarlane Art Studio. The studio is best suited for visual artists such as painters and sculptors, however photographers, filmmakers and those working in other creative disciplines are welcome to apply. The fellowship will cover a stay of up to one month.

To begin the application process, please email to hrwctr@uw.edu:

  • Your current CV
  • Link(s) to one or more websites on which your work examples may be viewed. You may include additional instructions or descriptions directed to the Selection Panel to specific work examples.
  • If you would prefer to attach files directly, you may select up to four graphic files (under 2 MB each) that must include your name and your work title in the name of the file. Please do not attach video or audio files. A link for these large file types is preferred. There are many repositories available for these type files, e.g. YouTube, Google Drive, Dropbox.
  • A statement of under 1000 words that describes the nature of your proposed project and what a Whiteley residency would mean to you.

The panel will begin consideration of applications on May 1st, 2018 and hopes to make the first award by July 1st, 2018. There is no deadline, and applications will be evaluated as they are received. The availability of the studio and housing in the Whiteley Center is greatest from September to May, although summer is possible for shorter stays.

You will hear back from The Whiteley Center within two months of receipt of your application materials. If your application is successful, the process for scheduling your residency will begin.

Thank you for your interest!
