With support from the National Science Foundation, FHL’s Lab 2 was renovated to become the Marine Genomics Center, completed in 2024. The laboratory’s main central area (ca. 1000 sq ft) is a dry space with 18 individual workstations as well as a communal bench with equipment for shared use. Adjoining the main area are three smaller rooms, one of which contains sea tables with running seawater for maintaining study organisms.
Facilities and Equipment
Visiting researchers with assigned FHL lab space or workstation may use the following shared equipment after receiving permission from Lab PI Dr. Billie Swalla. If you are interested, contact Dr. Swalla or FHL postdoc Dr. Becca Maher well in advance. Note that some items require FHL training first, and users must supply their own consumables and reagents!
PCR WORKSTATIONS/DEAD AIR BOXES (CBS SCIENTIFIC)
These boxes protect against contamination in sensitive PCR amplification reactions. Each one has an acid-resistant work surface, tempered safety-glass fascia, electrical outlets and fluorescent lamps mounted in ceiling, UV germicidal lamp (with 12-hour countdown timer including time-hold position), and single- or double-door closure.

NANODROP™ SPECTROPHOTOMETER (THERMO FISHER SCIENTIFIC)
The NanoDrop One Volume UV-Vis spectrophotometer uses built-in innovative sample intelligence technology for improved measurement accuracy and contaminant identification. Users can quantify and qualify DNA, RNA, and protein samples in seconds with only 1-2 μL, and obtain full-spectral data before they decide to use samples in downstream applications.
EPPENDORF MASTERCYCLER X50S (EPPENDORF)
With its intuitive touch screen, the X50S enables easy PCR optimization in advanced molecular research and dependable standardization in routine PCR applications. It is also perfectly fitted for next-generation sequencing (NGS).
4200 TAPESTATION SYSTEM (AGILENT)
The 4200 TapeStation system is a high-throughput electrophoresis platform for nucleic acid sample quality control. It allows fully automated, easy, and reliable analysis of DNA and RNA samples for up to 96 samples per run, providing true end-to-end sample quality control in next-generation sequencing (NGS) workflows.
MINION DEVICE (OXFORD NANOPORE TECHNOLOGIES)
The MinION Portable Sequencing Device offers real-time analysis in fully scalable formats from pocket to population scale; it can analyze native DNA or RNA and sequence any length of fragment to achieve short to ultra-long read lengths.
THINKPAD P1 MOBILE WORKSTATION (LENOVO)
For real-time analysis of MinION sequencing, the 16″ ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 uses Intel Core Ultra processors that allow advanced computing capabilities and multitasking.
CFX CONNECT REAL-TIME PCR SYSTEM (BIO-RAD)
The CFX Connect Real-Time PCR System provides excellent thermal performance for two-target multiplex PCR and routine detection of single fluorophore experiments.
