For Course Students

THANK YOU for following these procedures to help keep FHL and our island community safe!

To secure your spot, sign and submit the Student Confirmation & Agreement Form (we will send you a link to the form for your term; see text from current form below).

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE (plan in advance)!

  • Familiarize yourself with the FHL COVID-19 Response, and carefully review the pages on Key Rules & Procedures so you know what to expect.
  • Follow the “Before Arrival” procedures on this page: Before & Upon Arrival.  These include (but are not limited to):
    • Plan and schedule a COVID-19 PCR test; schedule the test as late as possible while still being sure to receive results before arrival day. More information on the page linked above.
    • Get tested and send documentation of results (it must include your name, date of sample, and results) to Bernadette.
    • During the two weeks prior to arrival, contact Bernadette if you or a household member has any of the symptoms listed on the linked page. As an example of how important this is: on Arrival Day for our 2021 winter quarter, a student informed us that they had very mild symptoms that were likely a cold; we asked the student to delay their arrival onto campus even though they were already on island. Two days later, the student and two family members received positive COVID test results. If that student had moved onto campus, they likely would have caused an outbreak at FHL, potentially shutting down the program for the quarter. The student prevented that by being open and forthcoming, even though it meant having to admit to not fully quarantining for two weeks. We are thankful to that student!
  • Order a COVID-19 test kit, sent in your name to FHL. You will use this kit for your post-arrival test during your first week here; we will let you know when and how to take the sample.
    • Follow the link below and click on “Get Started”
    • Fill out the 3-question survey; for question #2, answer “Congregate Setting,” which applies to attending a program at FHL.
    • Payment will be covered by your insurance or if not insured, by public funds.
    • Order the kit sent to this address:

  • All students will begin in private bedrooms; some will later be moved to shared (double) rooms. Before you get here, we will let you know if you will be sharing a room after quarantine.
  • Follow the “Upon Arrival” procedures on this page: Before & Upon Arrival. The list includes restrictions that apply only during the initial quarantine period, which will probably last about a week.
  • You should maintain your distance as much as possible even from podmates.
  • You are not allowed to enter indoor FHL spaces other than your housing and the Dining Hall.
  • The Dining Hall will prepare all meals for take-out during this period. You are allowed to enter the building only to pick up food and beverages, which you can consume outdoors or in your housing unit.
  • Your instructors or staff at FHL will let you know when and how to do the post-arrival COVID test, using the kit you ordered.
  • After all students have received negative results for their post-arrival tests, you will be out of quarantine – yay!  Some students will be moved to double bedrooms.

  • Do not leave San Juan County during your stay at FHL.
  • Go to town only for groceries, toiletries, and medications; the three retail establishments allowed to enter are King’s, Marketplace, and Friday Harbor Drug.
  • No eating/drinking in restaurants/bars, though you may pick up take-out food.
  • Make any visit to town as short as possible.
  • Other than essential town visits, limit other trips off campus to outdoor excursions; during such excursions, maintain distance from off-campus island residents.
  • Do not enter the housing unit of anyone who is not a member of your pod.
  • Face coverings are always required in indoor spaces other than your housing unit, and outdoors unless you are alone.
  • At all times, maintain at least six feet distance from non podmates and minimize close contact (< 6 feet) with podmates.
  • You may eat your meals and study in the Dining Hall, as long as you sit only at your pod-assigned table(s).
  • You may enter FHL commons spaces (including Stockroom, Library, etc.) unless told otherwise for specific areas.
  • When entering a common space to pick up, purchase, or return items (e.g. in the Stockroom or Fernald mailbox foyer), keep your visits brief.
  • In indoor spaces, follow posted COVID-19 capacity limits.
  • Take notice and follow any floor stickers indicating where to stand while waiting (e.g. in the Dining Hall and Stockroom).
  • Do not enter the Stockroom to retrieve packages; all parcels from USPS, UPS, and FedEx will be placed on a table outside the Stockroom entrance, and remain available there Mon-Fri, 8-5. If a package arrives for you, Peggy will let you know by email.
  • Disinfect common-use equipment (including computers) before and after you use it, using the supplies provided nearby.
  • As much as possible, use only the bathroom in your housing unit.
  • Only ride in vehicles, rowboats, and motorboats with members of your own pod.
  • Whenever you receive an email link for a Daily Attestation Survey, please clink on the link and submit the survey that morning.
  • You and your pod members are collectively responsible for maintaining the integrity of your pod and monitoring each other to make sure everyone is following the rules about distancing between pods.
  • Support and encourage others in the FHL community in following the Prevention Plan rules. If you observe someone putting the safety or well-being of others at risk, notify the FHL Director or Operations Manager.
