Science For All Ages
Since 2001, the Friday Harbor Labs Science Outreach Program (FHLSOP) has been bringing inquiry-based environmental science to the K-12 students of the San Juan Islands. Currently structured as a partnership between UW’s FHL, San Juan Island School District and Spring Street International School, this program partners research scientists with K-12 students, teachers and resource managers. Undergraduate student scientists from FHL courses are mentors for three different FHLSOP projects.
Hands-on projects have been designed to enhance science curriculum at the local schools, with a focus on involving students in the process of observing, asking questions, predicting, collecting & analyzing data, and making conclusions. This opportunity to use the scientific method and ask questions themselves thus positions the students as scientists and demonstrates that science can be interesting, fun, important, and is happening all around them. We work with students in the field, lab, classroom and UW research vessel Kittiwake to provide experiences which foster environmental awareness and stewardship of local marine and freshwater environments.
