Greetings,

This is FHL’s 100th Tide Bite! To mark this milestone, we asked Dennis Willows to write an essay covering some of FHL’s long and rich history (of which he was a big part, as Director for 32 years). Fortuitously, he has been working on writing a history/memoir, and pulled out a piece of that for us. Warning: his essay contains teasers that will make you want to read his whole book! We cherish our long history and its march through time of brilliant scientists – especially because, as this essay shows, the types of science done here are very diverse and this leads to important discoveries that might well not have happened except for the personal and scientific interactions that go on here, during and after “working hours.” In this case, a rocky shore ecologist sharing happy hour with a muscle physiologist.

Best,
Dr. Megan Dethier
FHL Director
