Greetings,
We like to focus our Tide Bites on the positive and don’t normally publish obituaries, but this month’s essay is an exception describing the contributions of a long-term islander-labbie, Liko Self, who passed away in late May. Liko was a member of the FHL family for several decades and was instrumental in both facilitating the body of work published by Drs. Jumars and Nowell and their graduate students, and also keeping the giant finicky “racetrack” flume functioning. It was a key piece of equipment for research by a generation of scientists at FHL, made possible by Liko’s attention to detail and love of tinkering. The Lab building that was designed to hold the giant flume has evolved into other uses over time, as research foci change with the decades. But for years, as Pete Jumars writes, it was Liko’s second home. We are proud to have known him.
Best,
Dr. Megan Dethier
FHL Director
