Dear FHL Friends and Family,

We have all been saddened this week by the sudden tragic loss in a car accident of a dear friend and colleague, Dr. Susan Williams.  Susan was Director of Bodega Marine Lab as part of U.C. Davis from 2000-2010, and still worked there as a Distinguished Professor and researcher.  Susan also had a house here on San Juan Island and had strong ties to Friday Harbor Labs, as she taught courses and did research here.  Her specialty was seagrass, seaweed beds and coral reefs.

Her passing reminds us that life is short and that we live in an interconnected, global community of scientists concerned about saving the oceans and the earth in a time of global climate change.  Those of us that knew Susan are reeling, but also inspired to continue her legacy of conservation and the establishment of Marine Protected Areas.

Our Tide Bite this month is from Tyler Carrier, a young researcher studying the bacteria associated with marine larvae.  Tyler came to do research at FHL with support from the Charles Lambert Memorial Endowment, which allowed him to carry on his thesis research independently.  This summer we funded 25 graduate student researchers with FHL endowments!  These students are our future and we thank them and those who have given generously to support these funds.

Life is short and the people in our lives are precious.  Thank a friend today.

Billie J. Swalla
Director, Friday Harbor Laboratories
