Dear FHL friends and supporters,

Happy Holidays!  I hope that you enjoyed the long Thanksgiving weekend.  We have so much to be thankful here at  Friday Harbor Laboratories!  It has been a difficult year in so many ways in our country, but here at FHL, the UW College of the Environment and the University of Washington, we continue to strive for excellence, diversity, equity and inclusion.  Our Tide Bite for December highlights how cutting edge marine research is FHL’s primary mission.  This work on marine bacteria was done by a visiting summer researcher, Dr. Lisa Crummet, along with an REU student from our summer program to increase diversity of people in marine sciences.  It takes a look at how ocean acidification changes diversity of bacteria in the ocean surrounding San Juan Island – check it out.

December is a time to reflect, give thanks and share love with our family and friends.  We hope that you enjoy being part of our community and wish you a very happy holiday season.

Much love to all of our FHL family!
Billie J. Swalla
Director, Friday Harbor Laboratories
