Resources for Black History Month

Black History Month provides us the opportunity each year to pause and reflect – on the innumerable contributions of the Black diaspora, on where we are as a global society in addressing and ending racism in all its forms, and on the important role we each play individually in either disassembling or allowing racist ideologies, institutions, and barriers to persist. The FHL DEIC aims to support the personal journeys of each member of our community as we collectively transform, grow, and make FHL more inclusive and vibrantly diverse. Here are several current resources we hope can be helpful, insightful, and transformative:

(1) On campus, support the UW Black Student Union and the UW Black Graduate Student Association and check out their resources and seminars.

(2) Working groups within Academics For Black Survival & Wellness (A4BL) have been hard at work developing several extremely useful resources in Google Docs:

(3) Visit the Black in Marine Science YouTube Channel for some great resources. You can also learn about and support BIMS on their website and learn more about resources and opportunities.

(4) Learn about some of the Black scientists and marine scientists who have made important contributions to their fields.

(5) These links to articles and books take you to selected readings for more information and insight.

(6) Other resources (particularly for instructors/faculty):
