Introduction to Research in Marine Biology

Credits: 6

Instructor(s): Dr. Alex Lowe

Prerequisites:

This course provides students with the opportunity to learn many of the skills needed to be an effective research scientist while participating in a mentored, hands-on project. There will be few lectures, although there will be scheduled class activities to gain skills in gathering, manipulating, and presenting data, as well as group discussions on research practices and ethics, and issues such as the role of research in marine science careers and choosing graduate programs. The bulk of the course will be spent engaged in research activities guided by a mentor. Research fields and topics will vary, but will involve lab experiments and/or field work in local habitats. This course is considered “writing intensive” for the purposes of UW requirements.
