Please take the time to read through the information below, because it answers many questions we commonly receive – including where to find your housing packet when you arrive. More information can be found on our website at: Working and Living at FHL. Do take a moment to look at it before you arrive.

FHL has a general “no pets” policy in all of its buildings and on the premises. However Service Animals are allowed to accompany their handlers while on campus. As defined by the ADA, as well as UW APS 46.6.,  a service animal that has been trained to perform an active task that mitigates or partially mitigates the impact of the person’s disability.

By confirming your arrangements, you agree to pay the charges estimated and to follow all the rules in the UW Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Lab Safety Manual.  These rules are explained in detail on the EH&S Laboratory Safety Checklist. You agree to comply with all FHL research policies, including those for collecting organisms and working with vertebrates.

Refer to our page on Boating and Diving at FHL for regulations and fees related to using FHL boats, SCUBA diving and snorkeling. Note that if you collect any animals or plants, you must submit collection reports prior to your departure from FHL.

Note that FHL charges an annual fee for SCUBA diving at FHL. In addition, divers may be charged an annual fee by UW Environmental Health & Safety. For more information, contact Dive Officer Pema Kitaeff. Please pay all expenses prior to your departure – by cash, check, MC/Visa (online via Iris) or a UW budget number.

Changes and cancellations for individuals must be made by email no later than 24 hours prior to your scheduled arrival date or by 8AM on the Friday prior to your scheduled weekend arrival date. Failure to cancel within this time frame will result in a charge of one night’s stay to be billed to your payment method chosen. Changes or cancellation are appreciated as soon as possible.

For Whiteley Scholars, please email Kathy Cowell to change or cancel you stay.  For other individudals, please email Stephanie Zamora to change or cancel your stay.

You may check in any time after 3:00 p.m. When you arrive, stop by the Front Office in Fernald Lab to pick up your housing packet, pinned to the bulletin board outside the Office door. If the Fernald Lab is locked when you arrive, your packet will be in the lockbox just outside and to the left of the building entrance. If you encounter problems after hours, please call our Caretakers at 360-298-0220.

You may check out at any time before 11:00 a.m. Upon departure, just leave your key in your locked housing unit or return it to the Front Office. Late departures may be charged for an extra day.

We provide pillows, linens and blankets for all beds in your housing unit, plus one towel per bed. We no longer charge an additional fee for bed kits.

Researchers, scholars and students staying at FHL for four or more days are issued and charged for Dining Hall meal credit — Dining Dollars. Residents of standard dorms and huts, lacking kitchen facilities, must subscribe to the full meal plan. Other housing units have kitchens equipped with major appliances, pots, pans, dishes and utensils; residents of these units must purchase minimum Dining Dollars if not subscribing to full meal plans. The minimum Dining Dollars is equivalent to two dinners (non-students) or one lunch (students) per week.

Once you’ve settled in, please stop by the Front Office so we can take your photograph or update a previous one. Also, let us know your license plate number if you’ve brought a vehicle.

Thank you!

*** Note that the WA State Ferries now accept reservations for travels to and from Anacortes and Friday Harbor. We recommend you make early reservations to avoid the very real chance of missing your preferred sailing.
