Spring Quarter

There are two program options available in Spring 2020:

  1. Spring Marine Studies (SMS)
  2. Zoo-Bot Program (Zoo-Bot)

In addition to these two quarter-long programs, UW will be offering a one weekend, one-credit course at Friday Harbor Laboratories (April 25 and 26) for undergraduates: Introduction to Marine Biology in the San Juan Islands.

Note: There are no FHL apprenticeships scheduled for Spring 2020. The next research apprenticeships will be offered in Autumn 2020 (“Pelagic Ecosystem Function in the San Juan Archipelago” and “Marine Sedimentary Processes”). Research apprenticeship opportunities vary each year but are always scheduled in either spring, autumn or both, but are NOT offered in summer.

Important Dates to remember for Spring 2020 at FHL:

    • Classes begin Monday, March 30 and end Friday, June 5, 2020 (10 weeks)
    • Students should plan to arrive Sunday, March 29 after 3:00 p.m.
    • Students should plan to depart anytime after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5 but no later than Saturday, June 6 after breakfast.

Spring Courses Details

Spring Marine Studies (SM) and the Zoo-Bot Program run a full academic quarter (10 weeks) and are targeted to undergraduates and post-baccalaureates.

Spring classes require a full-time commitment and are held Monday-Friday 8:30 am-5:00 pm.

Credits for FHL coursework will be earned through the University of Washington. Both UW and non-UW students can receive credit.

Students must apply and be accepted by FHL before they can be registered for Spring Marine Studies (SMS) or the Zoo-Bot Program. There are different registration procedures for University of Washington (UW) students and non-UW students.

FHL staff will provide Add Codes to UW students so students can register themselves through MyUW. All non-UW students will be registered by FHL staff.

UW students with dorm contracts in Seattle should cancel their application and dorm assignment in Seattle within one week of confirming their attendance at Friday Harbor Labs. Log into the UW Housing & Food Services Application and Assignment Home Page and submit an Agreement Termination Notice (located under the Resident Resources header for the relevant academic year). On the HFS form, to answer the question “Where are you moving to?” please select the choice “off-campus house/apartment.”

UW students are encouraged to contact the Student Coordinators in their respective departments:
