$29,343 of $29,000 Goal
Launched June 13, 2018.
For the past several years, Victoria Foe has been studying the interaction between DNA replication and transcription using transmission electron microscopy. When Garry Odell, her colleague and consort of thirty years, became ill, she set aside her nearly-finished project to care for him full-time. Now, some eight months on, the research grant from the Seaver Institute that had supported her work and maintained her electron microscope, has reached its term. We would like to help Victoria complete and publish this study.
Specifically, our goal is to raise, through small donations from friends and family, the cost of an additional year’s service contract for the transmission electron microscope, which is indispensable to her research ($22,000); liquid nitrogen and Drosophila media ($2000); and publication fees ($5000) for the two planned papers, which will be dedicated to Garry. Working to bring this beautiful piece of science to its conclusion is perhaps the best way for Victoria to heal. Please contribute only if you can easily afford to do so. Otherwise, send your warm thoughts towards Friday Harbor.
Beginning 1 July 2018, the University of Washington will be instituting a 5% gift assessment on current-use donations over $1000. No indirect costs or other fees apply to contributions of $1000 or less, or to larger donations if donors complete a pledge form or makes their donation before 25 June 2018 (to allow enough/sufficient time for processing). Please contact Rachel Anderson for details.
To face life’s ending with the same clear-eye appraisal of reality that characterizes a life in science requires great courage. Inspired by our hero Garrett Mitchell Odell (1943 – 2018), two members of the former Center for Cell Dynamics wrote this Biologist’s Elegy. It comforted Garry and us in his final days; and we offer it in the hope it will begin to address the dearth of a liturgy for people of science.
