COVID-19 Prevention for Course Students

THANK YOU for following these procedures to help keep FHL and our island community safe!


  • To secure your spot, sign and submit the Student Confirmation & Agreement Form (we will send you a link to the form for your term; see text from current form below).


  • Familiarize yourself with the FHL COVID-19 Prevention Plan.
  • **Review and follow Pre-Arrival Quarantine & Testing Procedures, including:
    • Plan and schedule a COVID-19 PCR test; schedule the test as late as possible while still being sure to receive results before arrival day.
    • Get tested and send documentation of results (including your name, date of sample, and results) to
  • To minimize the need for shopping while here, especially during quarantine, pack as many supplies (toiletries, nonperishable foods, etc.) as you can take with you. *We also encourage you to pack a personal thermometer.
  • Order a COVID-19 test kit, sent in your name to FHL. You will use this kit for your post-arrival test during your first week here; we will let you know when to take the sample.

    • Fill out the 3-question survey; for question #2, answer “Congregate Setting,” which applies to attending a program at FHL.
    • Payment will be covered by your insurance or if not insured, by public funds.

  • Review and follow Post-Arrival Quarantine & Testing Procedures.
  • Your instructors or staff at FHL will let you know when and how to do the post-arrival COVID test, using the kit you ordered.
  • After all students have received negative results for their post-arrival tests, they may be moved from private to shared (double) bedrooms.  They will no longer be in quarantine, and will be allowed to enter FHL spaces other than their housing, such as lab buildings, lecture spaces, etc.


  • Do not leave the county during your stay at FHL.
  • Limit trips off campus to those required for essential services (groceries, medical) and field trips. Restaurants (except for take-out) and bars are off limits.
  • Wear a face covering at all times when indoors (except in your own assigned housing unit).
  • Disinfect common-use equipment before and after you use it (supplies provided near equipment).
  • The only dorm room/hut/bedroom you should enter is your own (or a family member’s).
  • Maintain at least 6 feet distance from anyone who is not in your pod; even within your pod, keep close contact (< 6 feet) to a minimum.
  • Only ride in vehicles, rowboats, and motorboats with members of your own pod.
  • You and your pod members are collectively responsible for maintaining the integrity of your pod and monitoring each other to make sure everyone is following the rules about distancing between pods.
  • Support and encourage your pod members and other students in following the Prevention Plan rules. If you observe someone putting the safety or well-being of others at risk, notify your course instructor or TA.
  • These are unusual and stressful times, and we all need to look out for ourselves and each other. Monitor your own wellbeing, and keep an eye out for that of your fellow students. This form has a few questions for you to answer, followed by information on risks, rules, and procedures that students must agree to in order to attend a program at FHL. Please read the information carefully: make sure you understand our COVID-19 regulations and share them with the people close to you so everyone knows what to expect.

After you have agreed to the risks, rules, and procedures and submitted this form, we will put you on our list of confirmed students for spring quarter at Friday Harbor Labs!

COVID-19 Regulations: Testing & Quarantine

  • Students are required to get a viral (PCR) COVID-19 test before they arrive at FHL, and are responsible for making their own arrangements for the test. They should have the sample taken as close to the start of term as possible while still getting results back by the morning of Student Arrival Day.
  • Before coming onto the FHL campus, students must provide documentation (emailed to of negative results for the test above; the documentation should include the student’s name, date of sample, and a statement of negative results.
  • A few days after arrival to FHL, all students will be required to get a second viral (PCR) COVID-19 test. FHL will provide more information on the timing of this test and on ordering test kits for it.
  • After students have arrived and before their post-arrival test results have come in, they are under quarantine at FHL: they are not allowed to enter any buildings other than their own housing units and the Dining Hall (to pick up take-out meals and beverages), and must always wear masks around and keep 6-foot distance from pod mates as well as non pod mates, even outdoors.

COVID-19 Regulations: Throughout the Term

  • Students are required to stay in San Juan County for the duration of the quarter.
  • Students should minimize trips to the town of Friday Harbor, visiting only for essentials (groceries, medications, and other medical needs). They may enter three stores on island: Marketplace, King’s Market, and Friday Harbor Drug. **They may not enter restaurants or bars.**.
  • Students must always wear a mask in any indoor space except 1) their own housing unit and 2) the Dining Hall while they are eating or drinking (they should wear a mask while being served).
  • Students may travel in vehicles only with their pod mates.
  • Students may only use bathrooms assigned to them and their pod mates.
  • Students must wear a mask around and maintain 6 foot distance (even outdoors) from anyone who is not a pod mate.
  • While eating meals in the Dining Hall, students must sit at their pod-assigned tables.
